A student begins thrilled. They practice constantly for three weeks. Then they hit the wall: the songs get harder, the hands stop cooperating, practice turns into a fight, and somewhere in there a parent quietly starts wondering whether this was worth it.
While Matthew has inspired many students to build strong practice habits, he's found that most are what he calls late bloomers, just as he was. Between the ages of 8 and 12, practice was a chore, and it only happened like growth spurts. Lessons didn't become interesting until he started making music fun for himself. That's what he works to do with every student he teaches: make sure your child keeps coming back, and keeps enjoying the instrument.
His lessons are built to be worth showing up for, whether or not the week's practice happened. He uses structured lesson books when they help, but he always works in the songs a student genuinely wants to play, and he isn't afraid to let them reach for something a little beyond their level. He reteaches patiently, catches the small technical habits beginners pick up early, and keeps steering each student back toward good fundamentals.
Progress comes from the habits that stick. Matthew's job is to keep planting them, keep the student engaged, and keep the door open long enough for the music to take hold.
